Lucian K. Truscott and his men fought through some of the toughest operations of World War Two Torch, Husky, Shingle, and Dragoon.
From North Africa, through the length of Italy, into Southern France and eventually into occupied Germany, he led his troops onward to repel the Axis powers.
Command Missions is a fascinating account of Truscott’s journey through the Second World War, in which he recounts his fellow soldiers’ exploits, the co-operation and at times tense relationships between various Allied commanders, as well as intricate details of the battles that the American forces were engaged in.
Although he had little battle experience prior to the beginning of the war he quickly impressed his superiors. By 1945 he had commanded many different troops as he rose through the ranks during the course of the war including the 3rd Infantry Division in Sicily, the VI Corps at Anzio and in Southern France, and finally the Fifth Army from the Apennines to the Alps.
Truscott’s memoir provides brilliant insight into how commanders planned operations and reacted swiftly to the ever-changing situations of their troops on the ground. It was only through this combination of strategic preparation and quick thinking that the Allied armies were able to overcome their German and Italian enemies.
Drawing upon his own personal experiences, letters and orders from other generals like Patton and Eisenhower, as well as the notes and recollections of aides and other soldiers allow Truscott to create a vivid history of the Allied invasion of Italy.
Command Missions A Personal Story is essential reading for anyone interested in the military campaigns of World War Two as well as the leaders that commanded their troops to victory.
Lucian K. Truscott was a highly decorated officer of World War Two. He was one of the few U.S. officers to command a division, a corps, and a field army on active service during the war. He published this work in 1954 and passed away in 1965.

General Lucian Truscott, is it mostly unknown name to those who are students of the second world war. My first introduction to the same was in watching the movie Patton many years ago. I never knew that he was such a capable and valued member of the general staff during the war. One of the things that stands out the most is his intellectual superiority, without the grandiose fanfare. The reader of this book will be greatly enhanced by reading the same, as this general shares his experiences in the war without all the familiar criticisms of the leaders of the Allied armies which we read in so many of the other generals and field marshal accounts.Product details

Command Missions A Personal Story eBook Lucian K Truscott Reviews
The general public knew the tragic of a war, but the General's story tells how much planning was required. How many different weapons were going to be needed and when. How much cooperation between the Navy, Army and Air Force was needed and when each did his part in assisting each other at the right time victory came sooner and less cost.
Only complain was the editors allowed too many misspelled words. Had to read to she what word was or should have been in the text.
It is a generally well written story by Lucian Truscott. The role of the individual soldier is mentioned but more is spent on higher echelons and staff work. This will appeal to those interested in the Mediterranean Theatre in WW2. It demonstrates division and higher command and staff activity.
Lucian Truscott wrote this and is frank and open about he observed. That will surprise many in the current politically world.
He's on my very short list of great field commanders in WWII, and his summing up in the last chapter of the book alone is worth the purchase price, but the order of battle and events and movements he describes are difficult to follow without easily readable maps, which are not how I would describe the ones in the book. Read it anyway for insight into the evolution of a commander and how one human being learns from his mistakes in the most difficult of human environments -- and expects only the utmost from himself, this subordinates, and his superiors. (And how he restrained himself from calling Mark Clark a publicity-seeking jackass is beyond me.)
This is Gen. Truscott's story in his own words. He was not afraid to voice his opinions on both his, and other general's performance during the North African, Italian, and European campaigns. He went from colonel to lieutenant general, during his WWII experience. He commanded successively a division, a corps, and an army. How unfortunately it was that he was subordinate to the self-aggrandizing Mark Clark, during the breakout from the Anzio beach head. Certainly, he would have obeyed Field Marshal Alexander's orders to try and cut off the German 10th Army instead of seeking personal fame by driving straight to Rome. I wonder how many more Allied casualties resulted from Gen. Clark's obsession. As a former infantryman and officer I know who I would rather serve.
A great read!
Although not well known to many, Gen. Truscott was at the center of many crucial WW2 battles. His 3rd Infantry Division was one of the US Army's best, thanks to his leadership. This
autobiography gives the reader a highly detailed view of how he planned and achieved success in so many key battles.
This work is badly in need of editing. It seems as though someone was a victim of a spell - check system that on occasion substituted a work for another, creating a laughable sentence.
Some of the narrative in the book was sometimes rather plodding, and after a while I had to skip over sections of the narrative.
There were, however, some insights as to various battles that helped in understanding the details of what had happened. For example, the battle of Naples has been highly criticized in other books. General Truscott account sheds some additional light on that battle.
General Truscott's account of dealing with the Russians during the period after the war is also very enlightening.
Command Missions offers a wide window into the incredible complexities of fighting a war. It delves into the myriad details of planning, not only the logistics and materiel considerations, but the preparedness of the individual soldiers - their physical condition and mental preparedness. General Truscott also gives insights into the personalities of such leaders as Eisenhower, General Fredendall who mismanaged the Tunisian campaign that led to the U.S. debacle in the Kasserine Pass; British Generals Montgomery and Anderson, and the French General de Lattre and problems dealing with the French as allies. This book should be required reading for any student of military history, especially World War Two.
